Mix it up for results!
By Jo Miller

I was laid off from my job in BioScience in December and have had no interviews although I have sent out hundreds of resumes online. I am starting to feel desperate. Can you help me?

I receive many letters from readers who say they have submitted hundreds of resumes online and not received any replies. Although they are working hard at their job search, they are making two tactical errors:

  1. Relying on a single search activity.
  2. Continuing to pursue an activity that is not yielding results. Isn't the definition of insanity "doing the same things expecting different results"?
Sending out your resume online is an important piece of any good job search strategy, but it should not be your only activity. Financial advisors tell their clients to spread risk by not placing their life's savings in one type of investment. Similarly in your job search you risk missing out on opportunities if you place all your eggs in one basket.

A comprehensive job search utilizes a broader mix of activities. Don't stop submitting resumes online, but add to this by diversifying your activity base. You must add other search activities like cold calling, responding to newspaper advertisements, attending job expos, networking within your current circle of contacts, and networking to create new relationships.

Set weekly targets for all activities in your mix, and then track the results. Make adjustments to your activity mix depending on what is and is not working.
